EYL Reports - CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER III

METHOD AND PROCEDURES

This chapter discusses (1) the method and procedures of the study, (2) the research setting, (3) the technique for collecting the data, (4) technique for analyzing the data and (6) treatment.

3.1      The Method of the Study
This research is a classroom action research. Onel (1997:56-59) says that “action research puts ideas into practice for the purpose of self improvement and increasingly knowledge about curriculum, teaching and learning.” The action was done to solve the students’ difficulties in asking question.

3.2      The Research Setting
The student participants of this study were the fifth grade students of Elementary School no.2 Padang Selasa Bukit Besar Palembang. There were 29 students of class 5-b that comparing 14 males and 15 females.
The action research was done during the class period by using one teaching hour (45 minutes) per meeting after school hours using the materials.

3.3      The Technique for Collecting Data
In collecting data, we used observation, that is observing anything happened in the classroom during the teaching and learning process; diary or teacher’s note, that is nothing the students’ activity, reaction of the students during the teaching and learning process; personal approachment, that is asking the student if they have problems in the process of teaching and learning; and the students’ exercises, that is scoring the results of the students’ exercises. The observation and note taking was done during the implementation of the treatments, and the approchment was done after each treatment.
In this study, we used observation, the treatment, diary or teacher’s notes and progress tests. The observation was done during the treatment in every meeting. In addition, progress test was given after each cycle and the treatment was applied before we got the results of the students’ test.

3.4      The Technique for Analyzing the Data
The primary data to be collected were the qualitative data and quantitative data. In collecting the qualitative data, we wrote a diary to record the changes of the students’ progress during the treatment. To see the students’ progress, we took the data by analyzing the student performance in doing the exercises given to them.
Qualitative data is the data that was used to score the students, the data were collected by using progress test. Progress test was used in every cycle to measure the students’ progress in every cycle. For example: we gave the students written test to measure their progress in learning.
